We live in a world of distractions, and the workplace is no different. When overloaded with tasks and meetings it is often very easy to get off track, and sometimes even harder to get back onto that track. Making small changes in your day-to-day work routine can help you to become increasingly productive, as well as reduce stress.
Stop multitasking
Instead of partially working on multiple tasks at once, stick to one task and complete it in its entirety before moving on to the next. You will save time that you would regularly use to bounce back and forth and complete a task much quicker. Even if you think that you can juggle a few small tasks at once, don’t be tempted! Take them one by one and you’ll be done with all of them before you know it!
Use the “two-minute rule”
Make your free moments between bigger tasks useful. Find small tasks that can take you about 2 minutes and finish them right away instead of letting them stack up. Not letting a task sit and wait will save you time in the long run.
Take breaks and move
When your mind is in a place where it cannot focus, sometimes all you need is a five-minute break. Walking away from your work to get a drink or take a walk will have you coming back to your workspace with a clearer head.
Remove temptations
Limit distractibility by removing tempting items. Put your phone down and out of sight. If you are using your phone and computer for work, just choose one device. This will give your mind a clear path on what to focus on. If needed, turn off all notifications that are unnecessary. Create a space for yourself that encourages focus, not fights it.
Creating habits take time, so don’t be too hard on yourself! Instead take it day by day and remember that small changes have the ability to create big results.
